Description
The Island and Fort of Ten Pound Gloucester by Fitz Henry Lane 1847
Ten Pound Island seen from the port, with small groups of figures handling fish and pushing a boat in the foreground. The calm water is dotted with sailing boats and other vessels omnipresent in Lane’s views.
Fitz Henry Lane December 19, 1804 to August 14, 1865 was an American painter and printmaker of a style that would later be called Luminism, for its use of pervasive light.
Born on in Gloucester, Massachusetts and from the time of his birth, Lane would be exposed to the sea and maritime life—a factor that obviously had a great impact his later choice of subject matter.
