Description
Stud Poker by Charles Henry Alston 1938
Charles Henry Alston November 28, 1907 to April 27, 1977 was an African-American painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist and teacher who lived and worked in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem.
Alston moved from the rural south to a northern city during the Great Migration. After settling in New York, he helped establish the WPA’s Harlem Art Workshop at 306 West 141st Street. The workshop, known as 306, was an important hub for intellectual exchange for Harlem-based artists, musicians, writers, and social activists. In 1938 Alston received a fellowship to travel to several southern states, including his native North Carolina, to document southern black culture. He made several prints after photographs that he took on his trip, likely including Stud Poker.
