Description
Brace’s Rock Eastern Point by Fitz Henry Lane 1864
The Brace’s Rock series of paintings is thought to comprise Lane’s last dated oils, painted in the fall and winter of 1863–64, not long before his death in August of 1865. Paintings of unusual peace and harmony, they present a fitting finale to Lane’s evolution as a painter.
Fitz Henry Lane December 19, 1804 – August 14, 1865 was an American painter and printmaker of a style that would later be called Luminism, for its use of pervasive light.
From the time of his birth, Lane would be exposed to the sea and maritime life, a factor that obviously had a great impact on his later choice of subject matter.
