Description
The Ships Winged Arrow and Southern Cross in Boston Harbor by Fitz Henry Lane 1853
This painting shows two clipper ships leaving Boston Harbor: the Winged Arrow on the right with its sea dragon figurehead, and the Southern Cross on the left with its eagle figurehead.
Fitz Henry Lane December 19, 1804 to August 14, 1865 was an American painter and printmaker of a style that would later be called Luminism, for its use of pervasive light.
Born on in Gloucester, Massachusetts and from the time of his birth, Lane would be exposed to the sea and maritime life—a factor that obviously had a great impact his later choice of subject matter.
